Basketball Week 4

This week we practised our shooting skills with Clinton.  BEEF helps us remember what to do - Balance, Elbow In, Eyes Up, Follow through.

Practising our motion without the goal

Can you see the follow through?

Some of us were successful

Are we releasing the ball above our heads?

Measurement

During our measurement challenge last week, each group had an iPad to take photos of what we were doing.  Mrs Jackson taught us how to use the app Pic Collage to share our photos.

Danny

Danny is a poor little boy.  He has grease marks all over his clothes.  He has small pimple like eyes.  He walks around with a spanner in his right hand.

Alistair

Danny is a very short, skinny, bony child who looks like he is 7 or 8.  He wears grubby clothes and small shoes to protect his tiny feet.  His face is loaded with a big broad smile, a normal size nose and little happy eyes.  Danny has scruffy blonde hair and pale skin.  He has dirty hands that are always there to lend some help to his father.

Lily

Danny is a young boy.  He helps his dad fix cars.  He's always dirty from the grease marks.  He is very short, skinny and bony.  You should see his legs; they are like matchsticks.

Bob the Builder

This was my attempt at uploading a video from the iPad to the blog.  I used my own iPad to practise - hence the video of Ben.  However, I decided he was too cute to delete and that he models how to read a story by reading the pictures.  You can see how closely he is looking at what is happening!  Mrs J

Mrs Twit

Mrs Twit has a witch like nose, that is very pointy and goes into people's business.  She is a very chubby person, who has a walking stick to help her.  Her hair looks like she hasn't brushed it for ever.  She has teeth so out of line it would cost her a fortune to get them replaced.

Book Creator

Using the Book Creator app, we made a book about life in Room 5.  Unfortunately the app doesn't allow us to share the book on the blog.  Mrs Jackson is just working out how to have all our books on our class iPads so once she does come and have a read.

Basketball Coaching

Clinton (an ex Hawks and Breakers player) took us for basketball coaching today.  He started by teaching us the three main passes - chest, bounce and overhead.

Clinton also taught us the wrap around and back pass.  These passes were a little tricker!

Our competitive nature come out with a few games that put our dribbling skills to the test.  In some of these photos it isn't that we dropped or lost control of the ball but the ball was on the downward part of the dribble.

Word Work

Part of our Weekly 5 programme involves Word Work.  During this time we complete some activities using the words in the book we are reading, like finding nouns, contractions, counting syllables and different blends.  Once we have finished we can play a Word Work game - these are games like Scrabble and Hangman.  There are also students on the computer on Spelling City and others on the iPads using Bluster and Tic Tac Toe phonics apps.

Unison

Cooch and Jamie - Lee came and spoke to us today about electricity and keeping safe around power boxes and powerlines.

Typing Skills

Now that we have our own blogs to share our learning, Mrs Jackson wants us to get better at typing.  Lots of us leave two many spaces between words, don't put a capital I and hit enter when we don't need to!  Today we practised some skills.  Mrs Jackson hopes that with lots of practice we will be able to use two hands and maybe even not look at the keyboard.

Basketball Coaching

On Monday, Reece from Basketball HB took us for our first basketball coaching session.
We learnt that there are 4 key points to dribbling - use our fingertips; bend our knees; dribble at hip height; look up.
After a warm up and the chance to practise some dribbling Reece taught us some games to utilise our dribbling skills.  We really enjoyed Dribble King.

Buddy Reading

Most of us go to Mrs Neilson's class each day for Buddy Reading.  We work with a child from this class, listening to their reading and helping them with their words.  Those of us who don't go, buddy read with each other.  This is a great way for us to get better at reading fluently and to talk about what we are reading.

Skipping

On Wednesday 29th May, we are going to take part in the Jump Rope for Heart Skip-a-thon.  We will get sponsors to pay us to skip.  25% of what we raise will be kept for the school and will go towards more skipping ropes and other sports gear.  We started practising yesterday but need a lot more to be ready for the 29th.

Blogging

Today Mrs Jackson showed us how to post to our own blog.  The purpose of this blog is to share with our family the learning we are doing in class.  It will be great to share videos and pictures of what and how we are learning.  To have a look at our ongoing work in progress, click on the link down the right hand side.  Some of our avatars are upside down and sideways because we didn't quite master the way to do it correctly on the iPad.

The Right Fit

Today, Mrs Jackson introduced us to the Weekly 5.  This is a structure that we will be following to help us to become a better reader.  Mrs Jackson compared finding the perfect book to read to a pair of shoes.  If the book is too easy, it is like a shoe that is too small for us.  A book that is too hard, is like a pair of shoes that are too big for us - we need to do some growing!  The book that is just right (has words we can read and we can understand what is happening) is like the pair of shoes that fit perfectly.

Too Small = Too Easy

Too Big = Too Hard

Just Right = Perfect Choice

Oops!

Oops!  Just realised that the newsletters are sitting on my desk!  Don't blame your kids, parents :)
If you can't wait till tomorrow, go to the school website and find it there.
Sorry about that.
