Turtles

Megan presented her speech on Turtles today.

Way of the Cross

Today the Year 8s acted out the Way of the Cross.  It is a reverent experience to reflect on all that Jesus did for us.
The St John's boys came to school today too as they were reflecting on the Stations of the Cross.  They visited all the Catholic Schools.  It was great to see some of our ex students.

Ball Skills

Yesterday, we went out to practise our striking skills with the padder tennis bats.  Mrs Jackson let us show her what we could do.  Some of us used the wall to hit up against while others of us were confident to hit long distances.

Mrs Jackson then set us the challenge of seeing how many times we could hit the ball on bat without losing control.  Tom managed to get more than 200!!  A good challenge for the rest of us to try and beat.

Sea Work

We are really enjoying working our way through the activities on our Sea contract.

Check out Georgia's penguin poster,

Megan's turtle poster,

and Vaisiliva's venn diagram comparing turtles and dolphins.

Poplets

To all my students,
I am so impressed with how well you have done on your Poplets.  You were so quick to pick up the skills needed to use the app.  Mrs Cornforth was grateful to those of you who went over and helped her class publish their Poplets to their blog.  I look forward to teaching you how to use more apps over the year.
Mrs Jackson

Jellyfish

We have a project sheet of 20 activities to choose from relating to the sea.  One activity is to present a speech.  Georgia delivered her speech on Jellyfish to the class today.
You'll need to turn the volume up.

Rice Day

Every year just before Easter, we have Rice Day.  This is the day we think about how lucky we are to have food and experience what it might be like for those children around the world who go without food.  We do not eat morning tea and for lunch we have a handful of rice.  We drink a lot of water though!!  To help support CARITAS we have a raffle.  The lucky winner gets to choose a friend and Mrs Neilson takes them to McDonalds.  This year, it was Samuel from our class who won! Before lunch, we have a special liturgy and today Thomas (our Head Boy) blessed the rice. For some of us, going without food is a challenge but we did get to eat breakfast and we had afternoon tea when we left school.  This is more than some children!

Special Visitors

Charlotte's Mum brought their turtles in today.  They are terrapins and they can stay out of water for up to 7 hours.  They eat a frozen concoction of spiders and mosquitoes - luckily this can be bought at the shop!  We were fascinated with how fast they could move!

Filleting fish

Megan's Mum and Dad came along on Monday to teach us how to fillet fish.  Brendon demonstrated on a kahawai and Cherie, a pilchard - a small fish used mainly for bait.  They had bought along enough pilchards for us each to attempt the art of filleting.  Some of us were more successful than others.  While we were filleting the fish, Megan's sister, Amy, cooked up the kahawai and also some kingfish for us to eat.  This was a great experience for us.

Fitness

Mrs Jackson takes us out each day for fitness.  Some days it is a cycle round the track, other days it is relays, a circuit on the playground or our favourite - a game of Seaweed!

Aquarium visit

Last Thursday we visited the National Aquarium.  The Education Team were so knowledgeable and we learnt so much.  Thanks to the parents who came with us.

Death by Plastic

Charlotte and her Dad found a segment from Sunday about the green turtles and how ordinary everyday plastic is killing them.  We were shocked to learn that one turtle had swallowed over 200 pieces of plastic.  We encourage you to watch this clip.

Jesus' life

Today in RE we remembered all we knew about Jesus' life.
Below is Hana's work.  She gave specific examples of what Jesus did in his life.

Hastings Sports Park cycle/walk way

Today we were invited to the Hastings Sports Park to try out the new cycle/walk way.  Some of the students in our class cycled there (and then round the track 6 times!) while the rest of us walked with Mrs Jackson.  Thanks to Lily's mum, Matthew's mum. Te Mana-Potiki's dad and Samuel parents for joining us on our outing.  We will definitely sleep well tonight!

The cyclists, including Ms Crowley, Mrs Haronga and Mrs Crozier.....

Tapa Cloths

This year Caritas is helping our Pacific neighbours.  In Tonga, assistance is given so groups can make tapa cloths.  These cloths are sold to tourists, used at weddings and funerals and worn as a dance costume.  Christine's mum showed us some designs used on the tapa cloth and Mrs Jackson used the power of Google to show us some other patterns.  We had a go had recreating some of these patterns.

Haiku

In Writing we learnt how to write the Japanese poem - the Haiku.  This poem is based around nature and uses a syllable structure of 5, 7, 5.  Mrs Jackson shared some images from Google and we wrote a haiku about them.  We weren't very good at counting syllables at the beginning but got much better!!
